Before choosing a venue, theme or format, an organization should answer a more important question: why are we bringing people together?

The answer may be to recognize performance, introduce a new direction, strengthen relationships, celebrate a milestone or re-engage a team. Each objective requires a different type of experience.

A leadership retreat designed for alignment should not be planned like a celebration. A client appreciation event should not feel like an internal town hall. The format must follow the purpose.

Strategy also requires understanding the audience. What do attendees already know? What matters to them? What would make the experience feel relevant and respectful of their time?

From there, the organization can define the desired outcome and establish practical parameters such as budget, timing, location and level of production.

When strategy comes first, creative and logistical decisions become clearer. The result is an experience that feels coherent because every detail is working toward the same objective.
